Our Cattle

Cows

Double R Cattle began in 2014 with the purchase of 10 bred, purebred Angus heifers from a local farmer.  Since then, we have added a few registered angus cows to the herd, kept back heifers from our yearly calf crop to turn into momma cows, and have even tried our hand at raising herefords.  Today, we have nearly 100 momma cows, which are primarily angus, with a few of the hereford cross momma cows mixed in the herd, and we continue to grow each year.

We believe in taking care of our cattle as if they were part of the family.  We believe that a well taken care of momma cow is a happy cow, and a happy cow produces a good, healthy calf every year.

Finishing Cattle

All of our calves are raised by their momma's until they are 6 months old.  They are then turned out to grow on rich Kansas grass for another 6 months before going to our feed pen, where they are fed a grain ration and hay until they reach a butcher weight of approximately 1,250 pounds.

We believe in raising beef that is as natural as possible, so they are never given growth hormones or steroids.  They do get annual vaccines to keep them healthy and happy, and the only time they get any other medicine is if they happen to get sick.  Then they get a dose or two of antibiotics to help them get better.

Once they reach their butcher weight, they are taken to a USDA inspected processing plant.
